Standard box bases have not changed much since they were invented some 125 years ago. They typically consist of synthetic foam pads over steel spring units, covered in various kinds of synthetic coverings. Their synthetic makeup also makes them very difficult to recycle and they are typically disposed of into landfills - not good for the environment or your health.

The Swiss developed the first flexible slat bed in 1956.
