Sustainable Forestry

Okooko sources all timber from a sustainably managed native forest on the East Coast of New Zealand. A small number of native trees are harvested, with care taken to ensure the rate at which the trees are removed is geared to the forest’s capacity to replace them.
A number of programmes are in place in our sustainable forest to ensure nature’s balance is maintained:

Eco-systems are Nurtured
The entire forest ecosystem is studied, mapped and a plan generated to enhance regeneration and all round health. This plan manages flora, fauna, waterways, pest control and the health of the trees.

Pest Control is Managed
Pest control is an integral part of the plan. Possums may be cute but they are deadly. In New Zealand possums eat 24,000 tonnes of forest vegetation per day! Unleashing this amount of destructive force on our forests is not the way to preserve them for generations to come.
